About 50 Cent
Born in Queens, New York, on July 6, 1975, Curtis James Jackson III, alias 50 Cent, started rapping in high school. In 1996, when he was 21, he was introduced to Jam Master Jay from Run-D.M.C., who produced an album for it (although it was never released). Another album, Power of the Dollar, was recorded for Columbia Records in 2000, but that one was also shelved.
50 Cent didn’t let either setback stop him. He came to the attention of Eminem in 2002, after releasing the compilation album Guess Who’s Back? The meeting resulted in his being signed to Shady Records and Aftermath Entertainment, a decision that turned him into one of the world’s best-selling rap artists. When he became frontman for the hip hop group G-Unit and founded his own label, G-Unit Records, 50 Cent’s star power skyrocketed.
In February 2003, 50 Cent released his debut album, Get Rich or Die Tryin'. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and the first single, "In da Club", established a record as the most listened-to song in radio history within a week.
The critical and commercial success continued with the release of his second album, The Massacre, in 2005. Two years later 50 Cent’s third album, Curtis, debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, selling nearly 700,000 copies during its first week.
After reigning supreme in the music world, 50 turned him into a hot commodity, starring in the semi-biographical movie Get Rich or Die Tryin and launching his own PlayStation game, clothing line, and Vitamin Water flavour. 50 Cent is equal parts entertainer and entrepreneur, and 100% legend.
